Here are the directions for the Red River clean-up. The plan is to meet at the takeout at 8 a.m. and then drive as few vehicles as possible to the put-in at Russ Millers house. I have included directions to both locations. If, for some reason you are late getting to the takeout than just meet us at Russ Millers house.

Directions to the takeout from Bert T Combs (Mountain Parkway) East bound:

1. Take exit 40 for KY-15/ KY-715 toward Beattyville. Follow for 0.3 miles.

2. Turn right onto KY-15/ KY-715 North, follow for 0.7 miles.

3. Take the 1st right onto KY-715 N/Sky Bridge Rd, follow for 4.9 miles.

4. Turn right to stay on KY-715 N/Sky Bridge Rd, follow for 1.3 miles.

5. Destination will be on the left.

Directions to Russ Millers

1. Take the Mountain Parkway east to the Campton Hazard exit and go to the stop light at the bottom of the hill

2. Turn left at the light onto hwy 191 and zigzag through town, at about 1.5 miles from the light the road forks, take the left fork onto hwy 746.

3. Stay on hwy 746 for about 2.5 miles (do not turn left at about 1.5 miles at the concrete block building on to Calaboose Ridge road). After you pass a large white house on the left you turn left on to Calaboose Rocky Branch Road. About 50 yards down the road you will see Byrd Cemetery on your right to let you know you are on the right road.

4. Stay on this road for 1.5 miles when it will fork just before crossing a small concrete bridge. Take the right fork named Big Calaboose Creek Road, go .6 miles to where there will be two closed gates on the left side, go through the single gate (as opposed to the double gate) and stay on the gravel road which goes through the woods and then through another gate. Stay on the main road, go past an abandoned house trailer and go about another 400 yards and you will be at the end of the road and at our house.

Unfortunately I can't join in on any of the paddling and river stewardship awesomeness happening this weekend because I'll be getting even smarter taking a continuing ed class Saturday and Sunday. I've decided to focus my paddling energies on Memorial Day Weekend when I'll be more than ready to get back on the water.

Any interest in or suggestions for a good two or three day trip? Somewhere not totally overrun by tourists would be nice with maybe the exception of the New River because I just love it that much unless it's big enough to eat me like it is this weekend.

New River BIG WATER, Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!!! (6 replies)

The New spiked last night at around 35,000 CFS and looks like it will be dropping for the next several days, with little or no rain forecast in its watershed. I have a commercial rafting trip planned for Sunday, some of my co-workers are going to get in a raft and have a big time. I'm going to kayak along.

Now I don't have a crystal ball, but I'm guessing that on Sunday the New will probably be in the 10,000+ CFS range, big water in a big way. I'm driving down Saturday evening and boating with the crew on Sunday. If anyone would be interested in paddling with me on the Gorge, speak right up.

For those of you who did NRG trips with me in the last couple of years, the water levels were usually around 2000 to 3000 CFS, with the exception of the Bridge Day trip last year where it was up around 5000. So, if you're coming along on this trip, understand that it's a much bigger, munchier, squirrelier river than what you've seen. I'll be happy to answer any questions.

Thanks to the efforts of Russ Miller over the past 15 years and the BWA the Red River remains one of the prettiest rivers in the country, and what a way to spend a Saturday by making sure it stays that way. Here's a list of the people and canoes that have been expressed their desire to once again prove that they are spectacular individuals by participating in the Red River Clean-up set for this Saturday May 19th. If I have listed you in error just let me know. Bob Larkin @ 859-612-1275. But we are still in need of volunteers and canoes. Thanks for all those that have volunteered and for those that will.

Explored an area near the Cheoah River, just south of the Smokies in North Carolina, the Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness. Spent 3 days backpacking around this remote corner of NC, saw 3 people the entire time. The views were spectacular, and Slickrock Creek has been run...requires a steep 1.5 mile hike in, a 4-tiered waterfall, Wildcat Falls, and 6 miles of paddling eventually dumps you into Calderwood Lake very close to the Cheoah takeout. Lines looked clean to me, nice deep pools...needs a heck of a lot of rain though. Magical place.
A mile high, with panoramic views of the Smokies, Cheoahs and Unicoi's. Complete solitude. Worth the 2200' of elevation gain in 3 miles.

I have a day trip in me this Saturday, so I have been told. At the moment, RF is 807 and heading up. Watauga is 388 and heading up. RF is my first choice because it is an easier day including the travel. And, with the lake going up at the same time the Haysi gauge is rising like it is, there should be decent water this weekend. I would go to the Watauga though because it is so good. We will have to see however, if it holds enough to be above 250, to make it worth the drive. If so, I think it would be very doable to be there by noon on Saturday. Anyway, if that sounds choice to anyone, let me know. I will boat somewhere on Saturday. Those are the best options I see. (WV is running really good right now, I might add.) Might see some of ya'll out there?

Annual Pilgrimage to Chattooga Memorial Day Weekend (1 reply)

Memorial Day Weekend is rapidly approaching and The Annual Pilgrimage to Chattooga is once again upon us! Brit and I are of course planning to go and hope to have others join us. In fact we may NEED others for shuttle ;) I am NOT designating myself as Trip Leader for this trip. I am simply stating that Brit and I are planning to go there and would love to have a group of common adventurers join us! :) For those of you that do not know this river, the Chattooga is a Southeast classic whitewater destination! One of the earliest rivers to gain Wild and Scenic designation, it is otherwise well know as the river that much of the classic movie Deliverance was filmed on. Many also call the Chattooga the birthplace of whitewater recreation in the Southeast. I first boated the Chattooga in 1978 with my father. Since then it's always been a very special place to me. It has 3 commonly run sections: Section II requires Class II skills, Sect III requires Class III skills, and Sect IV requires Class IV skills (assuming water levels of ~2 ft or less).

I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Sect IV below Woodall has many deadly hazards. All are easily avoided at most flows, but unfortunately most are hidden - which make them all the more dangerous! Section III also has hazards, but again easily avoided at normal flows. The Narrows has an undercut on the left and a sieve bottom left that is not in play until higher flows - both easily avoided. Bull Sluice at the end of Sect III is a solid Class IV rapid (mainline) with a Class III sneak above 1.5 or so. It has hazards you should be aware of if you choose to tangle with it. Sect IV is Class III to Woodall and Class III-IV+ at Woodall above 1.5 ft or so. If you run Woodall, be aware of the innocent looking but deadly hole that is easy to avoid but unfortunately has claimed many lives. I will not go into all of the hazards on Sect IV below Woodall. I do not recommend attempting this section though unless you have a guide that knows the hazards! Many good boaters have died on Sect IV and there have been many more close calls. I highly recommend reviewing the AW pages on the Chattooga before attempting it or any other river for that matter. This especially important for lower Sect IV:

Sect III:

For those that are planning to run Sect IV below Woodall, I strongly urge you to read Buzz Williams (local legend) essay about Left Crack and his experience with a death there:

If you are with me we'll definitely be talking about Left Crack far above it.

In regards to what we are running on what day we have no plans as yet. Our preferences will depend on water level and who we are boating with. Most likely this will include anywhere between Earles Ford and the Lake. Brit and I are not planning on boating Sect II, but if others come that would like to do this section and some are doing Sect III from Earls then it may be possible to coordinate shuttle for these two sections if necessary. I'm hoping to have 1 or 2 strong boaters come along so I can introduce Brit / others to lower Sect IV ... if the water level is right. Other options include Ocoee Sat / Mon going to or coming home from Chattooga if others are into it. As I recall, that is the first weekend the Upper Ocoee is releasing. Or if we are blessed with rain perhaps runs in the Smokies.

When attempting to plan this trip in past years, no one seemed interested in pursuing campground reservations for group / other sites prior to the week before the trip. Therefore, I haven't seen a reason to try to organize campground reservations this year. Brit and I will most likely be staying at Mtn Valley Inn or Knights Inn in Dillard - cheap / clean. There are 2 good campgrounds in the area. Oconee State Park (SC) and Black Rock Mtn SP (GA). Both are about 20-25 min from US76 access bridge, where most trips meet. I've never stayed at either but been told by reliable sources that both are good, giving an edge to Black Rock Mtn simply because you pass through Clayton to get to it from the river - in case you need food, gas, etc. OSP is pretty much in the boonies. Check both parks out on the map if you're confused. If someone finds available spots at either and weather will be nice we may reconsider and camp / cabin as well.

There is also primitive camping at multiple access points along the Chattooga corridor. The most popular ones are the most convenient ones to US 76 access as expected - Woodall and Thrift's Ferry. They offer some pretty cool riverside spots. No camping is allowed at US76 and it is the closest car access to the river besides the Lake takeout. All other parking spots are 1/4+ mile from the river. So if you want to camp near the river you have to haul your gear that far. Other areas have good spots at / near the parking spots (Falls Creek) and I think Thrift's as well but Falls is a good ways from US76. In my experience Thrift's and Woodall are a bit crowded on Memorial Day weekend, particularly with a nice weather forecast. Brit and I are not usually into the primitive thing for this trip.

We've had some great times on previous trips introducing folks to this beautiful Wild and Scenic river. I very much hope to repeat that experience again this year! Check out the Chattooga, it's worth the drive!
